Knowledge from Eagle Digitizing: How To Screen Print A Simple Guide For Beginners

Screenprinting(Vector conversion) is a popular method for custom printing on shirts, polo shirts, caps and other clothing items. Screen printing is a process of printmaking in which the ink is applied to a mesh. The mesh can be made from either cotton or silk; it is stretched between two frames and used as a stencil to press ink through onto textiles, shoes, glassware and other materials.

The history of screen printing

Screen printing originated in China in the late 900's and spread throughout the Asian continent, not entering Western Europe until the 18th century. The printing method did not gain traction in Europe until the screen trade began to flourish, as fabric was the medium for screen printing. Screen printing was revolutionized in the early 1900s when photo-image stencils were introduced to the process - in addition to the use of toxic chemicals. Trial and error made the process safer, and by the 1960s Andy Warhol had popularized the technique, and other artists had followed suit. Screen printing on T-shirts was a booming trend in the late 60s and throughout the 70s. Today, it is the most popular method of t-shirt printing, business and retail.

How screen printing works

Screen printing starts with the artwork to be printed. Every color in the image needs to be isolated - this can be done using a digital art program. Then create a screen, think of it as a template, consisting of each color of fabric. The actual printing process involves applying ink directly to each screen to produce the design. Each color requires a separate screen. Repeat the process for each screen, adding layers of ink, until the final combined image is achieved.

When to use screen printing

Screen printing is often the most cost-effective method if ordering a large number of t-shirts. Small batches are not ideal as minimum quantities are usually required due to the additional material and labor required. It's also best for simple designs with limited colors, as each color requires its own screen.

Screen printing provides a high-quality appearance because the ink absorbs deeper into the fabric than other types of printing, resulting in cleaner edges. More control over the ink allows for longer-lasting vibrant colors, even with darker fabrics. In fact, if you're looking for high vibrancy, screen printing is the way to go. The technology also ensures long-lasting prints. The inks used, whether water-based or heat-drying, have a longer lasting effect than other types of printing. They have a stronger elastic bond to the material and can withstand multiple washes without cracking or fading.
